O carvalho-séssil (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) e o carvalho-roble (Q. robur L.) estão entre as árvores de folha larga mais valiosas, tanto do ponto de vista ecológico quanto econômico, na Europa Central. As duas espécies de carvalho são amplamente consideradas componentes importantes de futuros povoamentos mistos, ajudando a adaptar as florestas europeias às mudanças climáticas. Como são relativamente tolerantes à seca e mais resistentes a tempestades em comparação com outras espécies comuns da região, espera-se que sua participação absoluta e relativa na cobertura florestal aumente na Europa Central.

O carvalho-roble (Quercus petraea) é visto como uma alternativa em relação a outras espécies de árvores que são mais sensíveis à seca na Europa.
Introdução
A espécie está presente em toda a Europa, abrangendo desde a Espanha até o sul da Suécia, Noruega e Rússia.
