O gênero Populus pertence à família Salicaceae, que faz parte da ordem Salicales do grupo Amentiflorae, sendo amplamente distribuído no hemisfério norte e cultivado em muitas partes do mundo. Na Índia, várias espécies de Populus foram introduzidas, e entre elas, o Populus deltoides se destacou, ocupando atualmente grande parte de florestas, terras agrícolas, margens de estradas e canais em Haryana, Jammu e Caxemira, Norte de Bengala, Punjab, Uttarakhand e Uttar Pradesh. O Populus deltoides oferece grande potencial para atender à crescente demanda das indústrias que utilizam madeira, além de proporcionar renda extra aos agricultores. É uma madeira de lei de densidade média, com gravidade específica padrão média de cerca de 0,44. Sua madeira tem alto valor para serraria e fibra para aplicações industriais. É usada em caixas de embalagem para frutas e outros alimentos, e também se mostra muito promissora como fonte de fibra para diversos tipos de papel: papel fino, papéis de embalagem e papel de jornal. O Populus deltoides foi considerado uma das melhores espécies para consórcio com culturas agrícolas e hortícolas.

Espécies e híbridos de Populus são frequentemente usados como modelos em biotecnologia e melhoramento de árvores florestais, além de serem amplamente empregados na silvicultura protetora, devido a qualidades como crescimento rápido e boa adaptação a solos degradados.

O Populus deltoides é uma espécie de choupo originária da América do Norte, pertencente à seção Aigeiros. Seus híbridos com o Populus nigra são conhecidos como Populus x euramericana.
