Introdução

A Cornus mas L., conhecida como cereja-de-cornélia, é uma planta da família Cornaceae. Ela ocorre naturalmente do Sudeste da Europa até a Ásia Ocidental, sendo especialmente comum em países como Turquia, Bulgária, Grécia, Irã e Ucrânia. Muito usada na medicina tradicional, é reconhecida por seu alto potencial antioxidante e, nos últimos anos, tem sido foco de pesquisas científicas. Estudos apontam seus efeitos antioxidantes, antimicrobianos, anti-inflamatórios e anticancerígenos. Seus frutos são especialmente ricos em compostos fenólicos, flavonoides, ácidos orgânicos e vitamina C.

Introdução

A Cereja-da-cornualha é uma árvore pequena ou arbusto grande de crescimento lento, que prefere sol ou sombra parcial e solo bem drenado. A cultivar 'Spring Glow' tem baixa necessidade de frio, sendo a mais adequada para o sul do país. Suas belas flores e folhagem coriácea e atraente permanecem bonitas até a geada. O crescimento é moderado e as plantas jovens transplantam facilmente. A casca é muito vistosa e frequentemente exibida removendo a folhagem inferior. Pode atingir de 4,5 a 7,5 metros de altura e de 3,5 a 5,5 metros de largura. As flores amarelas, que surgem no início da primavera, lembram as da Forsítia, e são seguidas por frutos vermelhos comestíveis, parcialmente escondidos pela folhagem. No outono, as folhas ficam vermelhas. A planta responde bem à poda e pode ser usada como cerca viva.

Cornus mas L., conhecida popularmente como cereja-da-cornélia, pertence à família Cornaceae e é encontrada naturalmente na Europa e no Oriente Médio. No Irã, é abundante nas regiões do nordeste.
