Introdução

A Sequoiadendron giganteum, conhecida como sequoia gigante ou, no Reino Unido, como giant redwood, é uma árvore de crescimento rápido que pode viver por mais de 3.000 anos. Ela detém o título de maior árvore do mundo em volume.

Introdução

As interações entre as plantas e os microrganismos do solo são fundamentais para o sucesso da restauração de espécies em seus habitats naturais. Nosso estudo investigou como as práticas de restauração influenciam as relações da sequoia-gigante (Sequoiadendron giganteum) com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (MA), do grupo Glomeromycota. A regeneração natural dessa espécie é prejudicada pela falta de incêndios intensos, que criam clareiras no dossel da floresta. A abertura artificial de clareiras surge como uma alternativa para auxiliar na restauração da sequoia-gigante.

Introdução

As sequoias gigantes (Sequoiadendron giganteum) estão entre as maiores árvores do Reino Unido, apesar de terem sido introduzidas apenas em meados do século XIX. Estima-se que existam meio milhão de sequoias gigantes e sequoias costeiras intimamente relacionadas (Sequoia sempervirens) no Reino Unido. Dado o recente interesse em plantar mais árvores, em parte devido ao seu potencial de sequestro de carbono e também ao seu inegável apelo público, é importante compreender sua capacidade de crescimento. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre seu crescimento e captura de carbono nas condições do Reino Unido. Aqui, focamos em S. giganteum e usamos o escaneamento a laser terrestre tridimensional para realizar medições estruturais detalhadas de 97 indivíduos em três locais cobrindo uma variedade de condições diferentes, para estimar a biomassa acima do solo (AGB) e as taxas anuais de acúmulo de biomassa. Mostramos que S. giganteum cultivado no Reino Unido pode sequestrar carbono a uma taxa de 85 kg por ano, variando com o clima, manejo e idade. Desenvolvemos novos modelos alométricos específicos do Reino Unido para S. giganteum que se ajustam à AGB observada com r² > 0,93 e viés < 2% e podem ser usados para estimar a biomassa de S. giganteum de forma mais geral. Este estudo fornece a primeira estimativa do crescimento e sequestro de carbono de S. giganteum cultivado a céu aberto no Reino Unido e fornece uma linha de base para estimar sua capacidade de sequestro de carbono a longo prazo.
